• Do you use a pad or tampon together with a menstrual swimsuit?

The menstrual swimsuit is designed to provide protection on its own during your period. There is no need to wear an additional pad or insert a tampon, but if you feel you would be more comfortable, you can use extra protection.

• Is the menstrual swimsuit expensive?

Menstrual swimsuits are very efficient and durable, so buying one is definitely economical. It can be used for as long as 3–4 years without any loss of absorbency. If you follow the manufacturer’s instructions for washing and drying, this period can be as long as 6 years (remember that the swimsuit can last even longer, but its absorbency will gradually decrease slightly – this process will not be noticeable to you).

• Does a menstrual swimsuit leak?

No, the period swimsuit does not leak as long as it is used and cared for correctly. However, you should listen to your body and adjust how long you wear the swimsuit to your needs, depending on how heavy your flow is.

• Does the period swimsuit give off an unpleasant odour?

An unpleasant odor may sometimes appear if you have an intimate infection.

• Do you feel the moisture of menstrual blood in a menstrual swimsuit?

If the menstrual swimsuit is washed correctly, it does not lose absorbency and keeps up with absorbing blood into the absorbent layer.

• Does menstrual blood leak into the water when swimming in the pool/sea?

No, menstrual blood does not leak into the water, and here is why this does not happen:

Menstrual bikini (that is, menstrual underwear designed for swimming) is made from special materials that:

• the absorbent core locks blood and moisture inside the material,
• the outer layer is waterproof, which prevents leaks to the outside.

Thus, menstrual blood is locked inside the inner layer, while water from the outside does not get in.

When you are immersed in water, hydrostatic pressure comes into play, which:

• makes it harder for fluids to flow from the vagina to the outside,
• can temporarily reduce bleeding because the pressure of the water on the body gently “pushes back” the flow of blood.

• Water: has a high surface tension (about 72 mN/m at 20°C) due to strong hydrogen bonds between water molecules, which leads to minimizing surface area (e.g. droplet formation).
• Menstrual blood: its surface tension is lower than that of water due to the presence of proteins, lipids and other surfactants in plasma and endometrial secretions, which reduce cohesive forces at the liquid–air interface. As a result, menstrual blood is more easily absorbed into the surface of an absorbent pad compared with water, which tends to form distinct droplets and is less readily absorbed into the bikini/swimsuit pad.

Menstrual bikini briefs are designed to fit snugly to the body, especially around the groin and buttocks. This limits:

• water getting inside.

Blood does not flow freely under water. It’s worth knowing that menstrual blood doesn’t “run” continuously – it comes out in waves or drops, often only when you change body position or during uterine contractions. During a bath these factors are reduced, so less blood reaches the vaginal canal.

• Does the bikini/swimsuit absorb water while swimming?

• Why do menstrual bikinis and swimsuits absorb blood yet can still be washed?

The answer lies in the special, multi-layered construction of menstrual swim panties and the difference between water and menstrual blood.

The inner layer – the absorbent one – is made from organic cotton that absorbs fluids (e.g. blood, mucus). It is hidden under the outer layer, so it does not come into contact with water while swimming.

How to wash and care for a menstrual swimsuit?

1. Wash before first use.
2. After use, we recommend rinsing and/or allowing to soak before washing.
3. Can be hand or machine washed with the rest of your laundry or in a separate laundry bag (if you prefer).
4. If using a washing machine, wash at a temperature no higher than 40º.
5. For proper care, we recommend using neutral soaps. Avoid using chlorine, bleach, fabric softeners, natural oils, or Marseille soap, as they may affect absorption.
6. Do not use a dryer to dry your laundry as this may reduce its absorbency.
